Coach Mdu reflects on missed opportunities while Obaba settles for another draw

Obaba drew 2-2 with Diepkloof Giants in an exciting match at Zone 5 Diepkloof Ground on September 17, 2023.

The day didn’t go as planned when the Diepkloof Giants scored first in the first half. However, our former captain, Chicken, managed to even the score by the end of the first half with the help of a great through pass from Poposhie.

Despite having multiple opportunities to equalize, we were unable to convert our four shots on goal and two free kicks. Even though they scored early, we dominated the first half.

Match – Report

The Technical Team made several defensive substitutions at halftime, replacing Chicken and Sonic with Varo and Njection, respectively. But, as recent weeks have demonstrated, it is only a title, since our defenders have scored several goals.

As we intently watched the game progress, it seemed like an extension of the first half with both teams displaying unwavering determination to emerge victorious.

As the second half progressed, we couldn’t help but notice the more aggressive attacking tactics employed by both teams, indicating that neither side was content with settling for a draw.

In the end, Njection managed to secure a goal by capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Max, which propelled our team into the lead. However, it was unfortunate that Sbugazi missed a critical opportunity to score an easy goal, which could have further solidified our lead.

In the final moments of the game, we were on the verge of securing the victory and taking the three points home. However, our goalie Akani unfortunately committed a costly mistake, allowing the opposing team, Diepkloof Giants, to score and equalize the game. It was a disappointing turn of events.

“Today we made a lot of mistakes as a team and as individuals, and we really need to learn to punish opponents when given a chance,” stated Coach Mdu.

“Akani’s gaffe was unfortunate, but it couldn’t have been a major setback if we had taken our chances in front of the goalposts,” he added. “Despite the outcomes, there has been a significant improvement in the team. We’re always learning and getting better. We shall soldier on” Coach Mdu ended.

With only 11 games left in the season, we need to work hard to recover from the recent draw that left us in 6th place, trailing the current leader by 17 points. Every match counts as we aim to climb up the standings.

There will be a recess in the league this weekend, and when it resumes, we will be playing against Tinyiko Masters at home. We will need our 12th man on the stands as we aim to collect all points at home!
